Elizabeth Hurley talks comments on Instagram: people are mean to women

Elizabeth Hurley is a beautiful woman. She always has been. At 55 she takes very good care of herself, runs a successful career, which includes her beachwear collection, Elizabeth Hurley Beach, that she models herself. She is also huge in breast cancer fundraising, picking up the cause after her grandmother died of it in the 90s. At the Breast Cancer Research Foundation’s Virtual Hot Pink Event, Elizabeth talked to Extra TV about her fundraising and her beach line, mainly why she appears so much in bikinis on Instagram. She said it’s to sell her swimsuits. But she said people aren’t always kind in the comments. She also said that some trolls just liked being mean to women online.

Liz is living a healthy lifestyle — and it shows! The 55-year-old is turning heads every time she posts bikini photos on social media. She pointed out, “I have my own swimwear line. I wouldn’t ordinarily be prancing around in quite so much beachwear, so there is a reason behind prancing around in so many swimsuits.”

She added, “We haven’t been allowed to go on vacation in 14 months… I have a beachwear company and haven’t been on the beach… Hence, we have been selling what we can. We’ve been improvising. So, yes, we’ve been on hay bales, we’ve been in the snow, we’ve been in the shower.”

Speaking against those who make negative comments about her photos, Hurley said, “I think people are mean to women and I don’t think it’s how people should be, so I can’t say I am a fan of those comments, really.”

I’ll say it before anyone else does, men get crappy comments too and sometimes, it’s just for the sake of being crappy. But I absolutely agree with Elizabeth that women get more meanness online. I feel like when a man posts an obvious thirst trap, he and/or his commenters maybe poke fun at the intent behind it, but mainly the responses are good natured and complimentary. When a woman does the same, inevitably a swarm shows up to shame her – either for her appearance, what she’s wearing or her audacity to post a flattering photo of herself. Elizabeth flipping Hurley does not have to justify to anyone why she is posting photos of herself on Instagram in swimsuits, whether it’s to sell her line or because she likes to post them. I constantly see the women I follow saying they posted a selfie simply because they loved how their hair looked or the way their makeup turned out. We should celebrate ourselves when we want to. And I hope Elizabeth continues to, unapologetically. Hateful comments be damned.
